Sometimes, it isn’t feasible to visit an Orthodontist. It could be due to travel restrictions or during times of unbearable pain when the dentist’s clinic isn’t open. In such cases, it’s important to handle orthodontic problems at home.
Even if there are quick, temporary fixes, you must visit your orthodontist as soon as possible. You could even call them up to consult them.
Here are tips by our expert Orthodontist, Dr. Davood:
Keep all Supplies on Hand
To solve any form of orthodontic issues at home, you will need a set of tools and supplies. This includes dental floss, Q-tips, orthodontic relief wax, tweezers that are disinfected, salt toothpicks, over-the-counter pain relievers, and a topical anaesthetic.
O-Ring Which is Lost
To solve the issue of a lost o-ring or the rubber band the keeps your braces in place, you can place it back by using tweezers. Ensure that the tweezers are disinfected. In case the wire ligature itself comes apart, remove it with the same tweezers. Always contact your orthodontist after doing this.
After an orthodontic procedure, if you face discomfort in your mouth, you should keep rinsing with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Make sure to call your dentist if it continues.
Mouth sores can increase because of braces irritation. It could occur in your tongue, lips, or cheeks. You could get relief by putting a topical anaesthetic on the ulcer area with a cotton swab.
Irritation in Mouth
Irritation caused due to braces in the mouth can be solved with minimal orthodontic relief wax. Take out a small piece and roll it to a small ball, making it flat and putting it over the area of distress.
If you’re having a problem with a protruding wire, a Q-tip or disinfected tweezer can be used to put it back in place, making it flat. In case it cannot be moved, put orthodontic relief wax on top.
These are all short-term solutions. It’s very important to follow up on this with your orthodontist. Dr. Davoud Abdollahi is an expert in treating orthodontic issues of all forms. Book an appointment with him at Dento Faces Cosmetic Clinic, Dubai. Call 050 326 7300.
